Why digital product pages convert badly, and the fix

A physical product page can lean on photography. A digital one cannot, and most of them never replace what the photograph was doing: proving the thing exists, showing its size, and settling whether it is what the buyer wanted.

Name every file before the purchase

The single most effective change on a digital product page is listing the files by name, format and size. It converts an abstract promise into something concrete, and it eliminates the commonest refund request, which is that the buyer expected a different format.

If you cannot list the files because the product is a service or a subscription, say what arrives and when instead. The point is specificity, not the file list itself.

Show the actual thing

  • A template: show the first page as it really looks, not a styled mockup.
  • A workflow: show the node graph.
  • A course: show the curriculum screen with module names.
  • An ebook: show a real spread, including a page of body text.
  • Generic illustrations of laptops showing nothing in particular do less than no work, because they suggest there was nothing worth showing.

Answer the compatibility question early

Will this open in my software, on my version, on my operating system? For digital goods this is the equivalent of asking whether something is in stock, and burying it in a tab below the fold costs sales from people who simply did not find out.

State the licence in plain English

Buyers of templates and assets want to know one thing: may I use this in client work? A product page that answers it clearly closes sales that a link to a legal page does not, because nobody reads the legal page before buying.

Handle the refund question honestly

Digital goods have genuine refund complications, and pretending otherwise damages trust more than stating the policy would. Say what the policy is, where it applies, and show it again at checkout. A clear restriction converts better than a vague promise.
